The SAT costs $68 in the United States and $111 at most international centers. Late registration, center changes and cancellations add more, so Solo Prep helps students commit to one test date and plan for it. Here is every current College Board fee, and what you get back if your plans change.

College Board lists these amounts as valid through June 2027. Apart from the international and center fees, they are the same inside and outside the U.S. All amounts are in USD.

What the SAT costs in total

Where you testBasic costNotes
United States$68Registration fee only
Most international centers$111$68 registration + $43 international fee
International center with a center fee$135$68 + $43 + $24
International, registered late$149 or moreAdd $38 to the totals above

Most students take the SAT more than once, so a realistic budget covers two sittings plus any score reports beyond the four free ones. Pick your dates from the SAT test dates calendar before you register, since every change costs money.

How to change your SAT test date or center

SAT fee timeline: registration, late registration, cancel fee and late cancel fee
How the cost changes as test day gets closer. Amounts in USD, valid through June 2027.

Changing your test center for the same date costs $34 and is done in your College Board account by the change deadline, as long as the new center has seats.

Changing your test date works differently. College Board says that "to change the test date, you must cancel and register for a new test." In practice you pay a cancellation fee on the old registration, get the registration fee back, and pay again for the new date. College Board lets you cancel first or register for the new date first, so you can secure the new seat before letting go of the old one.

  1. Check the new date and center

Search for a center with open seats on the date you want. If nothing is available, keep your current registration.

  2. Register for the new date

Complete a new registration and pay for it. Doing this first means you never end up with no seat at all.

  3. Cancel the old registration

In My SAT, open the old registration and choose Cancel Registration from the "I would like to" menu. Before the change deadline the fee is $34; after it, until Thursday 11:59 p.m. ET before test day, it is $44.

  4. Watch for the refund

Refunds go back to the original form of payment and start 3–5 business days after you cancel.

Other details have their own deadlines: name, date of birth or gender changes go through SAT support by 6 p.m. ET on the Monday before the test; a new photo can be uploaded until 5 days before the test.

SAT refund policy

SituationWhat you get back
Cancel by the change deadlineRegistration fee refunded, minus a $34 cancellation fee
Cancel after the change deadline, by Thursday 11:59 p.m. ET before test dayRegistration fee refunded, minus a $44 cancellation fee
Absent or late on test dayNot covered by the cancellation refund. You register again and pay standard fees. Score reports ordered with registration are refunded.
Dismissed for invalid ID or rule violationsNo refund
Rush score reportsNot refundable

College Board describes the refund as the registration fee. If you paid international or center fees and plan to cancel, check the amounts in your account before you confirm. Canceling a registration is also different from canceling scores after you test; that has its own rules, covered in SAT score cancellation.

SAT fee waivers

College Board offers fee waivers to "low-income 11th- and 12th-grade students in the United States or territories and United States citizens living abroad." International students who are not U.S. citizens are not covered by that wording.

You qualify if at least one of these applies:

  • You are enrolled in or eligible for the National School Lunch Program.
  • Your family income falls within the USDA Food and Nutrition Service Income Eligibility Guidelines.
  • You are in a federal, state or local program for students from low-income families, such as TRIO programs like Upward Bound.
  • Your family receives public assistance.
  • You are unhoused or live in federally subsidized public housing or a foster home.
  • You are a ward of the state or an orphan.

Benefits include two free SAT registrations, unlimited free score reports, no international fee for free tests (for U.S. students testing abroad), no late registration or cancellation fees, reduced score verification fees, waived application fees at participating colleges, and free CSS Profile applications. Ask your school counselor for a code or apply directly at satfeewaiverform.collegeboard.org at least 1–2 weeks before the registration deadline. Fee waiver benefits can be received once per lifetime.

Ways to spend less

  • Use all four free score reports. They are free if you name the colleges by nine days after the test. After that, each report costs $15.
  • Register on time. Missing the regular deadline adds $38.
  • Commit to a date you can keep. A date change means a $34 or $44 cancellation fee on top of re-registering.
  • Never just skip the test. If you cannot go, cancel by Thursday before test day. A no-show is not covered by the cancellation refund.
  • Take the test when you are ready. Each extra sitting abroad costs at least $111. A timed full-length test on our practice platform shows where you stand before you pay.

If you are deciding how many sittings to plan for, our SAT study plans and live classes can help you plan your preparation around those dates.
