What the IB Diploma workload looks like
IB Diploma students take six subjects, with at least three and at most four at higher level (HL) and the rest at standard level (SL). On top of that sits the DP core:
- Extended Essay (EE): an independent research project that ends in a 4,000-word paper.
- Theory of Knowledge (TOK): assessed through an exhibition and a 1,600-word essay.
- Creativity, activity, service (CAS): ongoing activities across three strands.
Most subjects also have an internal assessment (IA), a piece of coursework completed during the course. Your school sets the internal deadlines for IAs, EE drafts and the TOK essay, and they often cluster in Year 2. Get your school's calendar early and mark every deadline before you choose SAT dates.
Final IB exams are held in a May session or a November session, depending on your school. May-session results come out in early July, and November-session results in early January.
When IB students should take the SAT

The short answer: before the Diploma gets heavy. In most schools the DP runs through grades 11 and 12, so grade 10 and the first half of grade 11 are the best windows.
| Period | IB load | SAT fit |
|---|---|---|
| Summer before grade 10 through grade 10 | Pre-IB or IGCSE year | Best window for most of your SAT prep, unless IGCSE exams need all your time |
| Summer before grade 11 | Before the Diploma starts | Strong window for an intensive SAT block |
| Grade 11, fall | Year 1, coursework building | Good time for official SAT attempts |
| Grade 11, spring | IA work begins in many subjects | Retest only if dates avoid school deadlines |
| Summer before grade 12 | EE writing often happens now | Possible SAT block, shared with the EE |
| Grade 12 | IAs, EE, TOK, mocks, applications | Last attempt by October at the latest |
For 2026-27, SAT weekend dates are August 22, September 12, October 3, November 7 and December 5, 2026, and March 6, May 1 and June 5, 2027. See SAT test dates for deadlines.
How IB courses overlap with the SAT
IB courses build skills the SAT rewards, but the formats are very different. IB assesses long written responses; the Digital SAT asks multiple-choice and short-answer questions about passages of 25 to 150 words and math problems under time pressure.
| IB course or component | SAT area | How it helps |
|---|---|---|
| English A (Language and Literature or Literature) | Reading and Writing: Craft and Structure, Information and Ideas | Textual analysis and attention to purpose and word choice. SAT grammar rules still need separate practice. |
| Mathematics: analysis and approaches (AA) | Math: Algebra, Advanced Math | Algebra, functions and equations. AA HL students usually need format and speed practice more than new content. |
| Mathematics: applications and interpretation (AI) | Math: Problem-Solving and Data Analysis | Statistics and modeling with data. AI students may need extra practice on algebraic manipulation. |
| Theory of Knowledge | Reading and Writing: Information and Ideas | Weighing claims against evidence, which matches the reasoning in SAT evidence questions. |
| Extended Essay and group 3 subjects | Reading and Writing: history, social studies and science passages | Practice reading academic sources closely. |
English A HL with Math AA HL gives the most direct support for the SAT, but choose your HL subjects for your interests and university plans first.
Sample IB and SAT timeline
Grade 9 and earlier: foundations
Build vocabulary in context and write regularly. Both habits help in the IB as well as the SAT. At this stage, focus on skills rather than test dates.
Grade 10: main SAT preparation
If you are in an IGCSE year, put IGCSE first. Otherwise, aim for a first official SAT in the first half of grade 10 and adjust your plan from the score report. Use the summer after grade 9 and the winter and summer breaks of grade 10 for SAT prep, because the time disappears once the Diploma starts.
Grade 11 (DP Year 1): best score in the fall
Aim to reach your best SAT score in the first semester. If the score is not there yet, keep one or two SAT sessions a week rather than stopping. Check that test dates do not collide with IA deadlines.
Grade 12 (DP Year 2): finish the Diploma
Put the IB first. Only students with time to spare should keep preparing for the SAT, and only through the first semester. Plan any last attempt for August, September or October so scores are ready for early deadlines.
Practical SAT tips for IB students
- Ask your coordinator for the full list of internal deadlines at the start of each year, and do not book an SAT in the same two weeks as an IA or TOK deadline.
- Use TOK habits on the SAT: for every evidence question, ask exactly what the claim is and what would support it.
- Read the academic sources you gather for your EE with SAT-style questions in mind: main claim, purpose of each paragraph, what the data shows.
- Schedule CAS activities in fixed blocks so SAT practice can also have a fixed weekly slot.
- Take a full-length timed test every few weeks during your main SAT block. IB coursework does not train SAT timing.
Our practice platform runs Bluebook-style full-length tests with adaptive routing and a domain breakdown, so you can see which SAT skills your IB courses are already covering.

FAQ
Do IB students need the SAT?
It depends on the colleges on your list. Many US colleges consider SAT scores alongside IB predicted grades, and policies vary by college, so check each one.
When should IB students take the SAT?
Ideally in grade 10 or the fall of grade 11, before IA, EE and TOK deadlines pile up. Plan any final attempt for August to October of grade 12.
Does IB Math AA cover SAT Math?
AA covers the algebra and functions the SAT tests, especially at HL. Most AA students still need practice with SAT question formats and timing.
Is the IB harder than the SAT?
They test different things. The IB grades two years of coursework and exams, while the SAT measures reading, writing and math skills in one sitting of 2 hours and 14 minutes.
When are IB exams?
The IB holds a May session and a November session, and your school decides which one you sit. May session results come out in early July.
